Sean O'Malley rose to popularity for his colorful hair, unique tattoos, and brash attitude. Now he can call himself the best bantamweight in the world.

The UFC might also have its next superstar.

O'Malley captured the UFC bantamweight title Saturday night, defeating Aljamain Sterling via TKO at the 0:51 mark of the second round in the UFC 292 main event in Boston.

"This is just the beginning of the Suga Era," O'Malley said in his postfight interview. "I'm running this shit until 2035, baby."

About 30 seconds into the round, O'Malley dropped Sterling with a crisp right hand as Sterling stepped forward. O'Malley unloaded with ground-and-pound, and Sterling turned to his back and tried to scramble to his feet. But O'Malley continued to pummel him and referee Marc Goddard stepped in moments later.

The first round was mostly a feeling-out process. Sterling landed a few leg kicks, O'Malley caught him with a solid punch, and Sterling attempted a takedown late in the frame. Sterling, known for his grappling prowess, did not secure a single takedown in the fight before O'Malley knocked him out.

O'Malley admitted afterward he was more nervous for UFC 292 than any other fight.

"In my eyes, Aljamain Sterling is the best bantamweight of all time. But I never lost the confidence because I know what I possess in this f-----g right hand, baby," O'Malley said.

Sterling said O'Malley is "a lot better" than he thought. Sterling gave the new champion credit for being elusive and picking his shots from the outside of the cage. However, the New York native was adamant he will be back in the title picture before long.

"I've lost before, I've been knocked out before, I've picked myself and I became a UFC champion," Sterling said in his postfight interview. "Do not be surprised if you come back and you see me in here again, and this time getting the belt."

Before UFC 292, Sterling said he planned to move up to featherweight should he get past O'Malley, which would allow his friend and teammate Merab Dvalishvili to fight for the bantamweight title. Sterling planned to call out UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski after he got his hand raised. But he was noncommittal on a move to 145 pounds after the loss.

"Definitely have to go back and reassess some things, because if (O'Malley) caught me like that, I can only imagine what Volkanovski would do," Sterling said. "There's some real soul searching I have to do."

With the victory, O'Malley extended his unbeaten streak to six fights. The 28-year-old earned a title shot by beating former champion Petr Yan by split decision last October.

O'Malley came into the UFC as a hyped bantamweight prospect in 2017 following a win on Dana White's Contender Series. He has only lost once as a pro, falling to Marlon Vera by first-round TKO in August 2020.

O'Malley said he is willing to defend his title against Vera, who also fought at UFC 292 and beat Pedro Munhoz by unanimous decision, at UFC 296 on Dec. 16. Vera is ranked No. 6 in the division.

"I'll whoop Chito's ass in December in Vegas at T-Mobile," O'Malley said. "Let's f-----g go, baby."

Sterling's nine-fight winning streak came to an end in the fight. This was his first loss since a 2017 knockout against Marlon Moraes.

"Funk Master" was defending the bantamweight title for the fourth time. He beat Yan in 2021 to win the belt and went on to retain it against Yan, TJ Dillashaw, and Henry Cejudo.
